When to Mail Your Wedding Invitations

So when is the best time to mail your wedding invitations? As a Wedding Stationer for couples for the past 4 years, I’ve been asked this question several times! While there are traditionally general guidelines as to when each piece of mail should be sent to guests, here at fioribelle we are all about making your wedding truly special and unique to you. So we aim to adapt to your specific timeline and situations.

When to mail your Save the Dates

Many couples these days are creating Save the Dates. These smaller cards, postcards or even magnets are typically mailed between 6-9 months before your wedding date. You’ll want to mail out your save the dates closer to 9 months or more if it is a destination wedding or one on a holiday. This allows your guests to plan accordingly and literally save the date in their social calendars! On a Save the Date, you really only need to include the date of the wedding and the city. Some couples even like to add their wedding website information where guests can follow along with the wedding process and get to know the couple better, see photos or get wedding day of details.

When to Mail your Wedding Invitations

In order to allow enough time for the RSVPs to arrive back to you, you will want to mail your invitations between 8-12 weeks before your wedding date. If you mail out the invitations too close to your wedding date, you will run into a shorter time frame to get all your guest totals to your venue for final head counts. On your invitations, you’ll want to include specific location and time information for your ceremony and reception. For more tips on what to include in your invitation check out our blog post “What Information Goes on your Wedding Invitation”!  For RSVPs, allow at the very least 4 weeks for guests to reply.

Other Events: Rehearsal Dinner, Bridal Showers, or Next Day Brunch events

A wedding is a special event and as such it should be celebrated! An engaged couple may have several events throughout their engagement in preparation for the big day! Invitations to stand-alone events like bridal showers are designed and mailed separately a month ahead of time.

For events occurring the day before or after the wedding, we typically include an insert card in your wedding invitation suite (like rehearsal dinner information). By having a separate insert card, it allows for it to only be included for a portion of your guests, traditionally your wedding party, immediate family and potentially out of town guests.

For weddings that have a separate more formal invitation for additional events like a Welcome Dinner and Next Day Brunch, 4 weeks should be plenty of time to include additional information to your guests.
